Mauritius has positioned itself as one of the most attractive destinations in Africa and the Indian Ocean for professionals, investors, and entrepreneurs looking to relocate or expand. At the heart of this strategy is the Occupation Permit (OP) — a combined work and residence permit issued by the Economic Development Board (EDB) that allows non-citizens to live and work in Mauritius legally.

Whether you are a foreign professional being hired by a local company, an entrepreneur looking to set up a business, or an investor seeking to take advantage of Mauritius's favourable tax regime, this guide covers everything you need to know.

"The Occupation Permit is one of the most straightforward routes to legal residence in Africa — and Mauritius makes the process refreshingly efficient."

What Is an Occupation Permit?

An Occupation Permit is a single document that combines a work permit and a residence permit, issued to non-citizens who wish to work or invest in Mauritius. It is administered by the Economic Development Board (EDB) and replaces the old system of applying for both documents separately.

The OP is available to three categories of applicants, each with its own eligibility requirements and conditions.

Documents Required

While requirements vary slightly depending on the category, the following documents are typically required for all Occupation Permit applications:

  • Valid passport (at least 6 months validity)
  • Completed EDB online application form
  • Recent passport-sized photographs
  • Police clearance certificate from your country of origin (apostilled)
  • Medical certificate (from a recognised institution)
  • Proof of qualifications (degree certificates, professional memberships)
  • Proof of financial capacity (bank statements, audited accounts)

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get an Occupation Permit in Mauritius?
The EDB typically processes applications within 5 to 7 working days, provided all documents are complete and in order. Complex investor applications may take up to 10 working days.
Can my family join me in Mauritius on an Occupation Permit?
Yes. Holders of an Occupation Permit can bring their spouse and dependent children to Mauritius. Importantly, the spouse is entitled to work in Mauritius without needing a separate work permit — a significant advantage over many other jurisdictions.
What happens if my application is rejected?
The EDB will inform you of the reasons for rejection. You can reapply after addressing the issues raised. This is why getting expert guidance on documentation and eligibility before applying is strongly recommended — it minimises the risk of rejection and delays.
Can I change my occupation or employer while on an OP?
If you are on a Professional OP and change employer, your existing permit becomes invalid. You need to apply for a new Occupation Permit tied to the new employer. This process can be managed seamlessly with the right advisory support.
Is the Occupation Permit the same as the Premium Visa?
No. The Premium Visa is a separate product designed for remote workers, retirees, and individuals with passive income who do not intend to work for a Mauritius company. The Occupation Permit is specifically for those working in, or investing into, the Mauritian economy.
